On the last Sunday of every month, Heart for the World Church in Las Cruces, NM, holds a free picnic. Our regular guests include the homeless and poor of our community.
This picnic is a service that we perform in response to the love that God has shown us by his Son. There is no requirement that guests be Christians, nor do they need to hear a message or sermon before being seated. As far as we are concerned, the sermon is on the plate.
We used 200 pounds of chicken leg quarters as the base for making a chicken and vegetable stew. The February picnic had a less complex menu than previous months, and had fewer attendees.
The January 25 picnic went well. We served chicken enchiladas, taquitos and beans. Almost all of the food was eaten, and was generally well-received, except for Jeff, who complained.
Our December 28 picnic is finally over. Thanks to all of our volunteers for your help, especially for all of your extra organizational effort to fill in for Barbara. We also would like to thank those local businesses that contributed tamales to the picnic.
Special thanks to the Thorlo Company for their generous donation of hundreds of socks. These high-quality and durable socks will go a long way for our guests, who must spend so much time on their feet, and will help relieve the cold for the children.
